Radyne/Banyard Billet Heating Systems

Induction heating offers many advantages over alternative forms of heating for aluminium and light alloys prior to extrusion.

It is widely accepted that taper heating (longitudinal temperature gradient) and isothermal extrusion yield productivity and quality gains. Only induction can provide the flexibility and accuracy demanded by modern extrusion companies. Induction heating offers energy efficiency up to double that of fuel fired systems, is compact and environmentally beneficial both in global terms and for the operators.

Radyne Vertical Billet Heater

Vertical Steel and Titanium Alloy billet heating

Banyard Vertical Steel Induction (VSI) systems have been designed for the precision vertical induction heating of solid or pierced billets and tubes.
  • Billet diameters over the range 150mm to 460mm
  • Billet lengths 300mm to 1500mm
Benefits of Single Shot VSI technology include
  • High circumferential temperature accuracy and repeatability. i.e. better temperature distribution
  • Automated coil tap variations for different billet lengths giving the ability to vary the temperature profile along the billet length
  • Ability to process billets from different materials with minimum oxidation and scale
  • No billet sticking and no glass lubricant build-up
Ferrous billet heating

Ferrous billet heating

Induction heating of steel provides many benefits including: Reduced scaling giving superior accuracy and finish
  • Reduced die wear
  • Improved energy utilization
  • Improved environmental issues as stipulated by E.P.A.
  • Minimal radiant heat
  • Repeatability and accurate temperature control
  • Minimal decarburization from metal surface
Multi-Zone Independent Power Billet Heating

Non Ferrous Brass, Copper, Aluminum Static Taper Heating

Inductotherm Group’s development of phase synchronized multi-zone power modules has made accurate static taper heating possible. A static taper heating coil is divided into a number of independently controlled zones each with its own thermocouples executing it's own power profile. This enables optimum temperature control and synchronization of the modules ensures that there is a seemless transition zone to zone.
Dynamic Taper Billet Heating Systems

Non Ferrous Dynamic Taper Heating

The most precise temperature profile is achieved dynamically. The billet is heated to a base temperature statically after which the billet is ejected from the coil at a precisely controlled speed providing an accurate temperature profile. During the dynamic heating eject mode, each heating phase is switched off as the field extender passes through in order to save energy.

Radyne Booster Taper Billet Heater

Booster Taper Heating

The Banyard “Booster” has established itself as a low cost, highly compact induction boost taper heater for use with either gas or induction pre-heaters. Using a servo-controlled billet positioning system to deliver both accuracy and high speed, the Booster enables extruders to boost billet temperature, line speed and hence production rates.
•    Can be retro-fitted to existing extrusion lines heated by gas

•    Provides greater control of billet quality thus
     improving productivity

•    Uses proven Inductotherm Lfi series low frequency IGBT inverters

•    Reduced billet scrap rate means improved market competitiveness and greater profits

Depending on the application and the size of the billets being produced, the induction coil is graded to provide the required fixed taper gradient.
The standard taper is 10 deg C per 100mm which is equivalent to 55 deg F per foot with a starting temperature of 350 deg C (662 deg F).
